What are the Buffys?

This prestigious event is the pinnacle of artistic recognition in our region, honouring the exceptional achievements and contributions made by talented artists and arts organizations, as well as the vital role the arts play in making our community a place to call home. 

Investing in the Buffys is more than attending a unique and highly anticipated event. By supporting Arts Council Wood Buffalo through this campaign, you are directly funding a program that nurtures artistic talent, builds a vibrant arts ecosystem, and empowers our community. 

Why is it important?

In a rural environment like Wood Buffalo, where arts institutions are few and far between, the Excellence in Arts showcase is vital. In recent years, our local economy and livelihood has been deeply affected by a series of hardships, including Canada’s largest natural disaster, the 2016 wildfire, a devastating flood in 2020, and the COVID-19 pandemic from 2019 to 2021. 

As investing in the arts has been proven to help communities heal in the aftermath of disasters, the Buffys were created as a catalyst for a thriving arts landscape that fuels a brighter future. 

Our program provides artists with much-needed networking, capacity-building and employment opportunities. It also keeps community members informed about the latest happenings in the arts and culture scene while promoting healing and community building.

What is our impact?

Since its launch in 2016, we’ve attracted over 22.7 thousand people to the Buffys.

In 2023, 271 artists were spotlighted, investing over $44,000 in the creative economy.  

In 2024, we want to raise the numbers even more and spotlight 300 local artists across various disciplines.

The Buffys 2024 will transport you to the captivating world of Midnight in Miami, paying homage to the city's iconic Art Deco heritage and its profound influence on popular culture. Imagine immersing yourself in the allure and glamour of South Beach in the 1980s, while being surrounded by the exceptional artistry of Wood Buffalo. This extraordinary event promises to be a feast for the senses, combining breathtaking performances, stunning visuals, and a vibrant atmosphere that will leave you inspired and uplifted.

Your presence at the event will help us raise awareness about the value of artists in our community, connecting residents and visitors with local talent and fostering a sense of pride and appreciation for the arts.

What difference will your contribution make?

With your contribution, we will make a lasting impact on the arts community and support artists in multiple ways:

Level 1: Empowering Artists

Goal: $3,000 

We will provide artists with valuable feedback on their application, resume, artist statement and biographies. This will ensure an equitable process and capacity-building as they learn how to apply for grants, residencies and other professional artistic opportunities. They will be able to leverage these newly acquired skills and resources for future applications.

Level 2: Elevating Artists’ Profiles

Goal: $5,000

We will create high-quality promotional material for short-listed artists, including a professional video portrait. This will greatly elevate their profile and increase their visibility in the industry. By showcasing their talent through visually appealing content, we will help them reach a wider audience and attract more opportunities.

Level 3: Encouraging meaningful connections

Goal: $8,000

We will organize an enthralling after-party event where artists, industry professionals and community members will get a chance to mix and mingle. This will provide valuable networking opportunities for both established and emerging artists. The event will foster connections and collaborations, opening doors for future creative projects and partnerships.

Level 4: Investing in local talents 

Goal $10,000

We will spotlight 300 artists through the Buffys creation process and will have the means to pay over 55 artists to perform and showcase their exceptional talent at the event. Your contribution will directly impact the lives and careers of these incredible artists.

Will I get a tax receipt for my donation?

For any donation made through this platform, you will automatically receive a tax receipt covering the amount of your contribution minus the value of your associated perks.

I can’t attend the event, can I still contribute?

If you can’t make it to the event, you are still welcome to donate and can choose to offer part or all your perks as a gift for someone else to enjoy. 

Can I contribute without choosing a perk?

Yes. To donate without choosing a perk, simply click on the Contribute button on the upper right side of your screen (desktop or mobile) and follow the instructions. You can also select "Tier 8 : Arts Ally (no perk)".
