Alberta Society of Health and Safety Professionals hasn't added a story.

Every day in Alberta, decisions made by Occupational Health and Safety Professionals determine whether workers return home safely - or don’t.

Yet Alberta currently has no independent regulatory body responsible for setting consistent standards, ethical oversight, or public accountability for these professionals.

That is what we are building - now.

Who Is Leading This Work

The Alberta Society of Health and Safety Professionals (ASHSP) is a nonprofit, member-led organization representing Occupational Health and Safety Professionals across Alberta.

ASHSP is undertaking the next critical step in public protection: establishing Alberta’s first Professional Regulatory Organization (PRO) for Occupational Health and Safety professions under Alberta’s Professional and Occupational Associations Registration Act (POARA).

Why This Matters

When professions that directly affect public safety are regulated, Albertans benefit through:

  • Clear, enforceable competency standards

  • Ethical oversight and accountability

  • Transparent complaints and discipline processes

  • Consistent expectations across industries and employers

  • Public confidence in those entrusted with worker safety

Today, Occupational Health and Safety Professionals do not have this regulatory framework in Alberta.

This campaign helps change that.

Why We’re Raising Funds - and Why Now

ASHSP is transitioning from a long-standing professional association into a formally recognized regulatory organization.

Before the Province can grant formal regulatory status, foundational infrastructure must be in place - including systems, policies, governance frameworks, and public-facing tools.

ASHSP is currently at a critical pre-recognition stage.

The work funded through this campaign supports the final foundational elements required to move toward formal regulation under POARA.

What Regulation Means in Practice

A regulated Occupational Health and Safety profession means:

  • A public registry anyone can search to confirm credentials

  • Clear rules about who may practise - and under what standards

  • Ethical oversight when standards are not met

  • Consistent, fair expectations across all sectors

  • Transparent processes that protect both the public and professionals

This is the infrastructure that protects workers - quietly, consistently, and long-term.

What Your Contribution Makes Possible

Your contribution helps ASHSP:

  • Build Alberta’s first public registry of Occupational Health and Safety Professionals

  • Develop fair, transparent, competency-based standards for Safety Professionals, Occupational Hygienists, and Occupational Health Nurses

  • Create secure digital systems for registration, continuing competence, and professional oversight

  • Produce accessible learning and guidance resources that support safer workplaces across Alberta

  • Support the transition of hundreds of Occupational Health and Safety Professionals into a regulated profession focused on public protection

Your contribution directly supports regulatory infrastructure - the systems and standards that make public protection real.

This Is Not a Donation

This campaign is not a charitable donation.

It is a public-interest investment in regulatory infrastructure that benefits:

  • Workers and families

  • Employers and industries

  • Safety professionals

  • The Province of Alberta

You do not need to be an Occupational Health and Safety Professional to support this work.
