Who We Are

The Alberta Society of Health and Safety Professionals (ASHSP) is a nonprofit, member-led organization representing the professionals who work behind the scenes to protect Alberta’s workforce.

Our members serve across construction, energy, healthcare, agriculture, manufacturing, transportation, and public services - supporting safer workplaces in every sector of the provincial economy.

ASHSP is undertaking a critical public-interest mandate: establishing Alberta’s first Professional Regulatory Organization (PRO) for Occupational Health and Safety professions under Alberta’s Professional and Occupational Associations Registration Act (POARA).

This is a public-interest initiative - not advocacy, not lobbying, and not charity.

Why This Matters

When professions that directly affect public safety are regulated, Albertans benefit through:

  • Clear, enforceable competency standards
  • Ethical oversight and accountability
  • Transparent complaints and discipline processes
  • Consistent expectations across industries and employers
  • Public confidence in those entrusted with worker safety

Today, Occupational Health and Safety professionals do not have this regulatory framework in Alberta.

What Regulation Means in Practice

A regulated Occupational Health and Safety profession means:

  • A public registry anyone can search to confirm credentials
  • Clear rules about who may practise - and under what standards
  • Ethical oversight when standards are not met
  • Consistent, fair expectations across all sectors
  • Transparent processes that protect both the public and professionals

This is the infrastructure that protects workers - quietly, consistently, and long-term.

This Is Not a Donation

This campaign is not a charitable donation.

It is a public-interest investment in regulatory infrastructure that benefits:

  • Workers and families
  • Employers and industries
  • Safety professionals
  • The Province of Alberta
