Bear Valley Rescue, in existence since 2003, is a federally registered charity that takes in unwanted, abused, aged or distressed horses and, occasionally, other farm animals. We rehabilitate and re-home those animals who can be re-homed and provide sanctuary for those who cannot. We educate the public on the plight of unwanted, abused and aged animals. We work with other animal rescue organizations as well, networking to provide homes for animals in distress.
Bear Valley has taken in and re-homed over 1600 horses since 2003. We now have over 150 horses in our care, along with chickens & other poultry, goats, llamas, and cows. We have taken in animals from across the province and placed them into new homes as far away as Ontario and the United States. We have an international volunteer program that brings us volunteers from all over the world. They stay with us for up to several months, assisting us in caring for the animals and other daily tasks.
We are helping people who have to surrender their animals due to a dire change in their personal circumstances: death, divorce, and financial hardship force people into making very limited choices when trying to find a home for their horse, especially if it is older or unsound. Other than selling the animal quickly at auction, where it will most likely go for slaughter, euthanizing their horse can be the only alternative. Most certainly, for those facing these difficulties, being able to give their horse to the Rescue, ensuring it has a safe future, is a big weight off their shoulders. They know the horse will be well looked after and, where possible, placed into a suitable permanent home.
