Building Families Together

At Fertility Alberta, we believe that building a family should not be a privilege that is only available to those who can afford it. 

Infertility affects 1 in 6 people of reproductive age around the world. Today, that 1 in 6 represents more than 250,000 Albertans. 

In addition to those with infertility, many others require fertility care to build their families such as single parents by choice, 2SLGBTQIA+ couples, oncology patients and others requiring fertility preservation.

Working directly with fertility clinics, we have learned that 250 patients are referred to 1 of Alberta’s 4 fertility clinics every week. That’s a total of 13,000 referrals a year. Only 13,000, less than 20%, proceed with treatment!

In the patient survey Fertility Alberta conducted last fall, we learned that 3/4 of patients who did NOT proceed with needed treatments stated cost as the barrier. 

More needs to be done to help Albertans build and grow their families. 

Why Fertility Alberta?

Our goal is to increase access to fertility health care for all Albertans. We plan to achieve this goal by advocating on two fronts:

Government Advocacy

• Educating and lobbying the Alberta government for a publicly funded fertility program
• Engaging patients across the province to get involved in grassroots advocacy

Employer Advocacy

• Educating and lobbying large employers in Alberta to add/increase fertility benefits
• Encouraging supporters to speak to their own employers

Fertility Alberta promotes fertility awareness through traditional and social media, aiming to reduce the stigma and misconceptions around fertility issues by providing access to tools and sharing resources.

The Challenge Ahead

In addition to our government and employer advocacy, we are working with post-secondary institutions, foundations and industry stakeholders to conduct needed research. We also plan to build a collection of resources to help patients navigate their fertility journey, empowering them to advocate for themselves. 

Fertility Alberta is a nonprofit, not a registered charity, making it difficult to fundraise. Our volunteer board of 6, collectively spends over 100 hours a week on this work but with so much to do, we need financial resources to support the work. Currently our only source of funding comes from sponsorships.

Given the exorbitant costs associated with fertility treatments, the dream of starting a family has become unattainable for many Albertans.

By supporting Fertility Alberta’s crowdfunding campaign, you are helping us advocate for equitable access to fertility care in the province. Every dollar goes towards our advocacy efforts, educating the government and public about fertility care, and reducing the stigma related to building your family with fertility assistance.
