Helping youth find the sport that 'fits' them can be challenging with over 80 sports on offer in the region. Committing to an entire season, paying fees and purchasing equipment can be expensive and time consuming. Especially when you are not sure your child enjoys that sport. Winter Try-It Day gives the regions youth a chance to experience various sports before committing to a season. They can find out if they enjoy the activity, like the coach and have interest in giving a season a go. Parents can get a feel for the club and the programs on offer.
Winter Try-It Day is FREE for all participants and participating sport organizations thanks to the support of the community.
The event is staffed by volunteers and run at multiple venues across the region including both city and county facilities. All funds raised go to cover the expenses of running the event, including promotional items (Each participant gets a free T-shirt.), signage, media and promotions.
Why is participation in sport important for youth? Participation in sport can help to promote health and wellness in our children and youths at an early age. It can build self-esteem, leadership and contribute to a sense of belonging. Youth that have peer relationships and support are shown to have high levels of resilience, giving them the tools needed to thrive in a world that continues to change around them. Becoming a member of a team or competing as an individual can have a positive impact and build self-confidence. Children and youths can learn about themselves and their ability not only as an athlete, but as a person.
It is recommended that children get 60 minutes of activity that raises their heartrate and makes them move at least three times a week. The goal of this program is to increase the opportunities for youth to participate in and reap the benefits of sport.
