The Yoga Association of Alberta hasn't added a story.
Over the past two years, everyone has been under enormous amounts of stress.
The Problem
We've all been through a lot, and the stresses continue. The pandemic and the measures put in place around it have taken a toll on all of us, both physically and mentally. Isolation and restrictions have made our support systems inaccessible when we need them the most. We are now dealing with unprecedented stress levels and mental health crises -- an over-burdened health care system, fear and divisiveness, anger, anxiety, and depression. Conflicts are occurring between nations, within communities, and within ourselves.
All of these stresses put our nervous systems into a chronic fight or flight mode, decreasing our resistance to disease. For the immune system to function at it’s best, we need to be able to let down our guard and feel safe, comfortable and relaxed. We need stability and ease.
Now, more than ever, humanity needs healing.
But we can’t do this alone. We need support.
The Solution
Yoga was designed to heal, to help us evolve
and thrive, through even the most difficult times. It brings our
scattered parts into a holistic synergy, and brings our communities
together in peace. Yoga is
inclusive, open and inviting to everyone,
and
diverse — there are a multitude of styles to
fit every need. If you’ve tried yoga before, you may already be a huge
fan! And if not, you just may not have found a class that works for
your needs... yet!
After a really good yoga class you feel calm, relaxed, and peaceful. Can you think of someone else who could use that feeling? Now imagine if everyone felt this way more often. What a wonderful world it could be!
Yoga was designed to heal humanity — through connection and community, from the inside out.
An ancient and time-honoured tradition, yoga is so much more than a fitness class — it’s a system for optimal health, for prevention and intervention at all stages of "dis-ease". Modern studies have proven that yoga is highly effective for dealing with stress, boosting the immune system, and flooding us with feel-good endorphins. Yoga also makes us more resilient, so we can better handle what life brings us with a calm clarity and a solution-oriented mindset. And when the stress levels settle, not only do we feel better and function better, but we also find it easier to connect with others in healthy and mutually supportive relationships. By spending time in a safe, supportive group held together by principles of kindness, truthfulness, respect, and appreciation of the diversity of life, we naturally become more kind and thoughtful towards others -- and ourselves. Our communities thrive as we heal the world from the inside out, one heart at a time.
Everyone should have access to yoga.
How You Can Help
Your support will help us continue our outreach offerings, bringing yoga to people who could not otherwise access classes.
Yoga Association of Alberta (YAA) outreach programs bring yoga to indigenous and rural communities, schools, prisons, low-income families, newcomers, and a variety of other under-served populations. Through the pandemic, the YAA has also offered completely free, accessible classes online through Zoom and offered first-time Associate Memberships for free, so anyone with access to a device can participate without barriers.
Let’s all get back to being happy, healthy humans again.

OUR MISSION
The Yoga Association of Alberta (YAA) was founded in 1976 by dedicated local yoga teachers who came together from a variety of yoga styles and lineages. Canada’s first and only non-profit professional yoga association and a registered charity, the YAA aims to support the wellness of all Albertans through yoga.
OUR GOAL
One of the YAA's main mandates is to reach out to underprivileged communities and bring them the healing benefits of yoga. We want to make yoga accessible to everyone in Alberta, to support yoga teachers in their efforts, and to bring diverse communities together in wholeness and healing. For more information on the YAA and our programs or to become a YAA member visit www.yoga.ca.
