Creation of an Interfaith burial section

Edmonton Chevra Kadisha's (ECK) mission continues to be to provide a dignified and respectful final tribute, ensuring every soul is treated with the utmost reverence and respect. Since 1907, dedicated volunteers have carried out the ritual care and preparation of the deceased for burial along with organizing the memorial service and burial process. 

In 2024 the membership of the Society created a committee to explore the inclusion of an Interfaith section within the north cemetery site. With Edmonton's above average Interfaith marriage rate (54% in the 2021 Canadian census), a need was identified to look at ways for Interfaith families to be buried together within the Jewish cemetery.

In February 2025, ECK membership overwhelmingly passed a motion to create an Interfaith section at the north cemetery,

allowing families with one non-Jewish spouse/partner to be laid to rest together.

This special section will be developed in two phases: Phase 1 - $250,000 and Phase 2 (future expansion) - $150,000. Site #1 permits are currently being applied for so that the land can be cleared and appropriately graded.

With the inclusion of an Interfaith section, ECK will continue to be a place where the sacred rites of a Jewish burial, along with respect for a non-Jewish spouse/partner, are accessible, meaningful, and a source of healing and comfort to those affiliated with the Edmonton Jewish community.
