Pembina Crisis Connection Society hasn't added a story.
The Problem: Domestic violence, intimate partner violence (IPV), and gender-based violence (GBV) continue to devastate lives in Alberta. The province consistently ranks among the highest in Canada for police-reported IPV cases. In 2021 alone, more than 19,000 incidents were reported, with many more going unreported. These forms of violence disproportionately affect women, Indigenous women, and LGBTQ2S+ individuals, with Indigenous women facing violence at three times the rate of non-Indigenous women. The reality is staggering: nearly half of women in Canada will experience IPV at some point in their lives. Behind these statistics are real people—victims and survivors—living in fear and often without the support they need.
The Solution: The Purple Lights Campaign seeks to raise awareness, provide support, and foster a community of solidarity. Throughout the month-long campaign, residents are encouraged to display purple lights as a visible sign of their commitment to ending violence. Funds raised will go directly to education and prevention programs aimed at reducing domestic and gender-based violence. Additionally, the campaign will provide resources and services to victims and survivors, offering them the support they need to rebuild their lives.
The Gap: While awareness and support for survivors are critical, current resources are stretched thin. Alberta’s high rates of IPV and GBV continue to outpace the available support systems. Many victims, especially those in marginalized communities, do not have access to the necessary programs, shelters, or educational resources. Without increased funding, the cycle of violence will persist, and countless individuals will remain without the help they desperately need. The Purple Lights Campaign aims to close this gap, but we cannot do it alone.
The Heroes: This is where you come in. By supporting the Purple Lights Campaign, you become the hero in the lives of those affected by violence. Your contribution will not only help raise awareness, but it will also provide direct assistance to survivors, helping them access life-saving resources and support systems. Together, we can shine a light on this critical issue and create a safer community for everyone.
What You Receive: In exchange for your support, you will receive more than just a token of appreciation. Your contribution will help light up the community with purple, symbolizing hope and solidarity for all those affected by violence. As a supporter, you will also be part of a movement to raise awareness and provide tangible help to survivors. Most importantly, you will know that your generosity has contributed to lasting change in the fight against domestic and gender-based violence.
Together, we can make a difference. Let us shine a light and offer hope to those in need.
