What we do.
Many seniors, people with disabilities, and low-income families in Calgary face ongoing food insecurity due to rising food costs, limited mobility, and financial barriers. Too often, this means skipping meals or being unable to access nutritious food, with serious impacts on health and dignity.
At the same time, many grocery chains regularly dispose of edible surplus food due to retail policies and best-before dates. This contributes to significant food waste—an estimated 1.31 million tones annually—while many community members go hungry.
What we've done.
The iCare uCare Association (ICUC) Food Rescue Program bridges this gap by rescuing surplus food and distributing it free of charge to those in need. Through strong partnerships with grocery suppliers and coordinated community action, we address barriers such as transportation, logistics, mobility, and communication. Our program is powered by dedicated volunteers, including 18 volunteer drivers and 22 volunteers who sort and distribute food. The program operates 5–6 days per week, ensuring all donated food reaches families the same day it is received. Over the past year, nearly 300 families have benefited through approximately 15,000 program visits. |  |
How funds will be used.
 | We are seeking support through the Alberta Government’s Crowdfunding Program to help cover transportation and storage space costs. As food costs, demand, and fuel prices continue to rise, our program is facing growing operational challenges. Increased donation volumes mean more frequent and longer transportation routes, including pickups from Calgary’s outskirts and Airdrie, placing a financial burden on volunteer drivers who currently receive no reimbursement and constrains on our program operation. Your support will help ICUC to sustain our success in our Food Rescue Program and increase our capacity to serve more families. |
