Family violence, including domestic violence, intimate partner violence (IPV), and gender-based violence (GBV), continues to devastate lives in Alberta. The province consistently ranks among the highest in Canada for police-reported IPV cases. In 2021 alone, more than 19,000 incidents were reported, with countless more going unreported. Women, Indigenous women, and LGBTQ2S+ individuals face disproportionately high rates of violence, with Indigenous women experiencing violence at three times the rate of non-Indigenous women. Nearly half of women in Canada will experience IPV at some point in their lives. Behind these statistics are real people—victims and survivors living in fear, often without access to the support they need.
The Pembina Crisis Connection Society is launching a 6-month Empower Hope campaign to raise awareness, provide essential support, and foster a community of solidarity in Drayton Valley. 100% of funds raised during this campaign will be directed toward education and prevention programs aimed at reducing family violence, as well as critical resources and services for victims and survivors to help them rebuild their lives.
While awareness and support are crucial, current resources are stretched thin. Alberta's high rates of IPV and GBV continue to outpace available support systems. Many victims, particularly those in rural and marginalized communities, lack access to the programs, shelters, and educational resources they need. Without increased funding, the cycle of violence will persist, leaving many without help.
