1 in 6 children in Canada suffer from hunger.

Let that sink in for a minute, that means that out of every six children you see one of them is hungry, doesn't have access to nutritious food, or worries about when their next meal will be. 

Children and youth who are suffering from food insecurity are more likely to:

• Struggle in school
• Have behavioral issues
• Have delays in physical, intellectual, and emotional development
• Are more prone to serious illnesses including diabetes, high blood pressure, and obesity

Project Backpack is a national BGC program that provides families with food-filled backpacks that they can use to make easy, nutritious meals when Clubs or schools are unable to provide them. The Project Backpack program:

• Provides children and youth at risk of weekend hunger with food that they can share with their family
• Gives children and youth access to healthy meals that they can easily assemble themselves
• Offers food that is tailored to the unique needs of each child’s home situation, family structure, food sensitivities, etc.

BGC Olds and Area is proud to be running the Project Backpack providing the most vulnerable children and youth in our community with healthy food that they can share with their families during critical times when they may not have access to healthy meals.
